In their “The Good, the Bad, and the Verdict” film reviews, Joseph and Mike normally give their thoughts on a slice of cinema. However, “Exhumed” will focus on the first (or very early) credits of established actors, giving their roles the GBV treatment. For this installment, it’s Leonardo DiCaprio in Critters 3.
Before he was gracing the silver screen as a brooding romantic or a determined environmentalist, Leonardo DiCaprio cut his teeth in the sci-fi horror comedy, Critters 3. It's a curious starting point for a career that would eventually lead to Academy Awards and global stardom. Yet, even in this early role, glimpses of the actor's potential are evident.
DiCaprio plays Josh, the stepson of a villainous landlord, in a film that's more notable for its campy B-movie charm than its dramatic depth. Given the nature of the film, his role is primarily reactive, caught up in a whirlwind of chaos as the titular Critters wreak havoc on the small town. However, DiCaprio holds his own amidst the over-the-top action and special effects.
While the character of Josh isn't particularly complex, DiCaprio brings a youthful energy and vulnerability to the role. His performance is marked by a naturalism that is surprising for such a young actor. He effectively conveys fear, confusion, and determination as the situation escalates, and his chemistry with the other young actors in the film is genuine.
It's important to remember that Critters 3 is not a showcase for dramatic acting. It's a popcorn flick, and DiCaprio's performance fits seamlessly into that context. While it may not be the role that defined his career, it serves as a valuable stepping stone, demonstrating his early ability to hold his own on screen and foreshadowing the talent that would later blossom.
In the grand scheme of DiCaprio's filmography, Critters 3 is a mere footnote. However, it's a fascinating glimpse into the early days of a career that has gone on to achieve extraordinary heights.
