In our “The Good, the Bad, and the Verdict” column “Recommended Rawk,” Joseph shares news about current and recent rock album releases. For this installment, it’s The Spyrals’ new album Retrograde on Inside the Moon records.
I wasn’t aware of The Spyrals before getting an early press-only listen to the trio’s forthcoming album Retrograde — set for November 15 release — but wow, the band is on my radar now! Retrograde is highly recommended guitar-driven rock and roll music that is equal parts throwback and 100% fresh and current. You can get an early taste of what’s in store with the first video from the album, “Dream Believin’”:
Following is the official press announcement:
Containing eight tracks that encompass themes of isolation, heartache, and self-assurance, The Spyrals new album lives up to the band's promise to create music that sounds unrehearsed. Possessing waves of garage rock, psychedelia, and alternative rock and roll, RETROGRADE acts as a culmination of the band's previous efforts. Recorded at Station House Studios over the last couple years, production for the album purposely airs on the minimal in an effort to maintain the band's live sound. Paired with a mysterious video for the track "DREAM BELIEVIN," the trio clutches onto those last moments of sleep before waking up.
Forming in 2009 in San Francisco, The Spyrals quickly became renowned for their loud, live, and magnetic performances. Aiming to capture the vivacity of their stage presence, The Spyrals make dashingly unapologetic garage rock that'll have any listener locked in. Steered by brainchild Jeff Lewis, the current roster of the band includes Georgia Feroce and Dash Borinstein on keys and drums, respectively. From blues vamps to spaced-out bliss, the band's psychedelic roots shine through on their forthcoming fifth LP, Retrograde (out November 15th).
